Handicap Policy

HANDICAPPING POLICY
The handicapping policy for the Moreno Valley Golf Club (MVGC) is based on the guidelines provided by the United States Golf Association (USGA); for more detailed information refer to the USGA Handicap manual on file at the golf course. The Handicap Chairperson (HC) will interpret these rules and determine a handicap for each member. All challenges will be directed to the HC, and if an agreement is not reached with the HC, the MVGC Board of Officers will decide, and their decision will be final. The following is by no means complete but should serve as a summary for the policy as interpreted by the MVGC Board of Officers.

1. The official handicap is 96% of the difference between the average of the lowest ten (10) adjusted (see attached sheet on adjusting scores) 18 hole rounds of the last twenty (20) rounds and the course rating, 54 for Cottonwood Golf Course.

2. Two (2) 9 hole rounds can be summed as one 18 hole round, providing they are played within the same calendar month.

3. Twelve (12) 18 hole rounds is required to obtain a permanent handicap. A temporary handicap is determined by using the top 50% of all 18 hole scores with a minimum of four (4) rounds (i.e. with seven (7) posted scores the handicap will be determined by the three (3) best rounds).

4. The official handicap used for each month is established on the 1st day of the month, using all scores posted prior to the first day of the month. Temporary handicaps are adjusted on the day of a tournament.

5. The HC with probable cause and documentation, can re-rate a player's handicap prior to the beginning of a tournament.

6. Only rounds played at Cottonwood Golf Course are to be posted and used when computing handicaps.

7. The maximum handicap is 36.

8. The handicap can go up by a maximum of two (2) per month, but there is no limit for how fast a handicap can drop.

9. All handicaps are rounded to the nearest whole number (i.e. computed handicaps from 11.50 through 12.49 will round to a 12).

10. Golfers with no handicap will use the Callaway system for tournaments.
